Creating Women 3

Creating Women is a project I have been working on, a study of professional and creative women in their 60′s, 70′s, and 80′s. Through photographic profiles and essay, I seek to document the lives and creative work of older women and to explore the interactions between creativity, work, and aging.

Creating Women: Diana NicholsDiana Nichols, with her husband Howard Nichols, built, with drive and creativity, one of the top independent schools in the country. (Harker School, San Jose California. Visit Harker School website here.) Diana and Howard both retired after long careers in education – the capstone of which was building Harker’s new secondary school. After Howard passed away, shortly after their retirement, Diana threw herself back into education, taking over as chairperson of Harker’s board and leading the school into even more new ventures. Now 72, along with her education work, Diana continues her very active lifestyle practicing Tai Chi and Zumba.

Edna Wagner Piersol is a watercolor artist with a long career as an artist. Edna was born in 1931 and won her first national award in 1949. Edna has been teaching watercolor painting to adults for more than 50 years. (Visit Edna’s website here. See her book on watercolor painting here.)

I recently visited one of Edna’s classes. These images are from that visit.
