The blog is moving to a new home, Joanne Mason Photography. After something like 5 years, I am closing – or at least no longer updating – this site. Maintaining this is a major operation, and it detracts from what I want to do, which is simply to comment on photography and art, and occasionally post an image or two. I would also like to link the blog more closely to my main photography site, Joanne Mason Photography. The new blog is at http://joannemasonphotography.com/blog. I hope you’ll visit that site, bookmark it, and return often to add your comments. In the meanwhile, Random Sights is not being deleted, and you can still find al the old posts here. Many thanks.

An exercise in line, angle, planes, curve: Interesting though essentially spiritless geometries in modern office buildings. The treatment of the images in infrared emphasizes the rather ominous and impersonal – lifeless – nature of this architecture. Click each image for a larger view.
By the Light of the Moon. Nikon D7100. 12mm. ISO 200. 25 sec at f/4. Copyright Joanne Mason 2016.
This image is illuminated with a combination of ambient (moon) light and some limited added light, and with very little post capture processing. We rarely see the trees illuminated this way since even on a clear moonlit night, the moonlight provides insufficient light. And we don’t wait 25 seconds for our eyes to collect the light. I think it shows the forest wide awake under the moon at a time we tend to assume all are asleep.

I find these branches – near ready to burst into bloom – a form of visual poetry. Few words are necessary or desirable.
Lakeside Grass. Fuji X100. 23 mm. ISO 400. 1/600 sec at f/11. Copyright Joanne Mason 2016.
This grass is growing at the shore of the lake. I find it interesting and attractive how the wind (even a steady breeze) shapes the growth and display of the grass.
My long-time followers know how much I love trees. Trees, to my mind, are almost sentient. The stand over the landscape and assure that all is right with the natural world. These trees have a celebratory air about them as they rejoice both the warm morning sun of late winter and the imminent arrival of spring. This stand of hickory trees was shot at Grace Farms.
