Grand Canyon with Tree. Nikon D200. 17-55mm Nikkor f/2.8, at 22mm. ISO 200. 1/600 sec at f/2.8. Copyright Joanne Mason 2012.

I’m raiding the archives for images that haven’t been posted here yet. Here’s another from the Grand Canyon series, shot in the mid-afternoon sun from the south rim. Click image for larger.

Canyon View with Old Tree

Canyon View with Old Tree. Nikon D200. 12-24mm Nikkor f/4 at 22mm. ISO 200. 1/200 sec at f/13. Copyright Joanne Mason 2012.

This image from the Grand Canyon series is new here, not previously posted. It’s newly edited. Needless to say, I like the remnants of old trees. Click for larger.

Grand Canyon Sunset redux

Grand Canyon Subset. Nikon D200. 17-55mm Nikkor f/2.8. 23 mm. ISO 200. 1/500 sec at f/4.8. Copyright Joanne Mason 2012.

This is the Grand Canyon at sunset, shot from Navajo Point on the South Rim. This has to be one of nature’s most spectacular shows. I have edited this and similar shots more than a half dozen times (see here and here), trying to get the color right. This is the best version. (Click image for larger.)

Grand Canyon, South Rim

Grand Canyon from South Rim, February 2012. Nikon D200. 17-55mm Nikkor f/2.8, at 31mm. ISO 200. 1/160 sec at f/6.7. Copyright Joanne Mason 2012.

In color, this image is in Landscapes of the American Southwest. I wondered how it would come out if reprocessed to black-and-white. (I’m working more and more in black-and-white nowadays.) We think of the extraordinary color of the Grand Canyon to be one of the Canyon’s draws. Yet it’s an exceptional place even in black-and-white. What do you think? (Click image for larger.)

Bluebird

Bluebird. Nikon D200. Nikkor 17-55mm f/2.8. 48mm (Equiv 72mm). ISO 200. 1/400 sec at f/6.7. Copyright Joanne Mason 2012.

I was photographing a few hundred meters from this spot along the south rim of the Canyon. This bluebird literally flew up and said hello to me, but once he knew I was aware of him he led me a merry chase along the rim. He never stopped long enough to pose, but I did capture this.
