Autumn Graveyard in Maine

Graveyard in Autumn, Maine. Nikon D200. AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 17-55mm ED-IF. 17 mm. ISO 400. 1/60 sec at f/10. Copyright © Joanne Mason 2012.

This may be a little out of season. I’ve been sorting the image libraries and redoing the galleries at joannemasoncreative.com. Over the last year, these images of fall foliage in Maine, and the graveyard images, have been among the most searched and most popular images on the blog. I came across this one, realized it had never been edited, so here it is. I think this image is really all about the tree. If you consider that many of the graves in these old New England graveyards are related by family and such, the tree with all its branching becomes kind of a metaphor for the families and communities over time represented by the graves.

By A Maine River

By A Maine River
is a book by Thomas and LeeAnn Szelog, Maine wildlife and conversation photographers. The book documents a year of closely watching for one year the natural life in and by the river through their property in backwoods Maine.

I relaunched this Random Sights blog back in June after a hiatus of a couple years. In the earlier incarnation of Random Sights, I had a post promoting Tom and LeeAnn Szelog’s work.  I recently came across my own copy of By A Maine River and thought I should repost about it again. It’s really a delightful work, full of images that document the simple pleasures and sheer joy of observing nature closely when you’re fortunate enough to live in some place like Maine and surrounded by such wonders.

I should mention an earlier work of Tom and LeeAnn’s, Our Point of View,  documenting their time together for  fourteen years living in a lighthouse on the Maine coast.  Both books highly recommended.  Tom’s current project is focused on developing a Maine Woods National Park. There’s what promises to be a great photodocumentary project coming from it. →See here for more information.

Maine Pond

Fall is such a glorious time of year in Maine. Scenes like this take on added tranquility. This pond was shot in early fall. Site search statistics tell me that searches for “Maine” and “fall foliage” images are incredibly popular right now. So here is another one. (Not sure why I had to shoot this at ISO800… Maybe just a lapse. Or perhaps I needed to freeze movement of the leaves and still get extreme depth of field. I did have to do some noise reduction to the image.) – Joanne

Here is an autumn scene, autumn just around the corner. For my friends in Australia, spring is about to burst forth. But here in the US, it’s Labor Day weekend, and it will be autumn before we know it. This image has been tweaked with some HDR business and some sharpening, but these colors are real.  Joanne

Summers in Maine inspire a special wonderment, a tranquility and acceptance that transcends all troubles. Sunset over a Maine lake … As calm and inspiring as can be.
