Lamp on Wall

Lamp on Garden Wall. Nikon D200. AF-S DX Nikkor 35mm f/1.8. 35 mm (Equiv 52 mm). ISO 400. 1/250 sec at f/13. Copyright Joanne Mason 2012.

While wandering the gardens yesterday, I came across this cottage wall. Something about the lamp on the wall appealed to me surrounded by the interplay of sharp shadows on the wall. The scene has a noirish feel to me. I kind of like the way it turned out.

First Azalea of Spring

Azalea. Nikon D200. AF-S VR DX Micro-Nikkor 105 mm f/2.8. 105 mm (Equiv 157 mm). ISO 400. 1/320 sec at f/8. Copyright Joanne Mason 2012.

Azaleas are the sure harbinger of spring. On a cool sunny day, the speckled and nearly translucent petals fairly radiate warmth and happiness.

Camelia Season

Camelia-1 Camelia-2
Camelia-3 Camelia-4
Camelia-5 Camelia-6

It’s been mild recently, and spring comes early to Southern California anyway. So that means it’s an early camelia season. Yesterday’s stroll through the gardens produced a wealth of camelia pictures. Herewith a few.

Technical: All shot with the Nikon D200. (On my previous visit to the gardens, I used the new Fuji X100. I have to say that I don’t think the Nikon lenses quite as sharp as the Fuji.) ISO 400. All shot with AF-S VR DX Micro-Nikkor 105 mm f/2.8. Handheld, VR on. Most images were shutter-priority, starting at around 1/200 sec. After the camera set the lens, though, aperture was sometimes adjusted to a wider opening if not there already to assure narrow depth of field. This usually ended up about f/3 or f/3.5.  (A smaller aperture might have been sharper.)  Some images were shot with fill light supplied by the ring flash on the lens. All shot Raw, adjusted in Lightroom and Nik. Some images have had detail increased and some have have been softened. (All images copyright Joanne Mason 2012.)

I’ll have to head back to the gardens (→Descanso Gardens) soon, this is just the start of the camelia season!
