BEAUTY CULTURE @ Annenberg Space for Photography

“Beauty Culture” is a fabulous show at the →Annenberg Space for Photography (which is a great space for exhibiting and featuring the art and craft of photography) in Century City, Los Angeles. If you are in or near southern California, you should definitely see this show. But you have only a week left; the show closes November 27.

In the words of the show description,

BEAUTY CULTURE provides a seminal examination of photography’s role in capturing and defining notions of modern female beauty and how these images profoundly influence our lives in both celebratory and disturbing ways.

The show presents a terrific collection of images, hundreds of them, by dozens of  terrific and talented photographers, going back to the early days of photography. Even if seen only as a resource of many wonderful photographs in fashion and beauty, the show would be worth seeing. There’s great photographic talent on display, considerable in both quantity and quality.

Snow Tree

The Snow Tree is so-called because of it’s ability to withstand being buried by large amounts of snow for long periods. The Snow Tree is native to – and so far as I know only found in – Eastern Australia.  A variety of Eucalyptus – or Gum Tree as the Eucalyptus is called in Australia – the snow tree is also sometimes called a snow gum. I think the bark of this tree has great character. Unfortunately, I believe most native snow trees in Australia have been cleared. This tree is in the Royal Botanical Gardens in Melbourne.

White Lily

There’s been so much interest in the lilies here lately. This white lily has been around a while – There’s even a version on my portfolio (→Viewbook) site – though never posted on the Random Sights blog. So here it is, newly re-edited. I have a special liking for this image. Making it was fun, and the result (which is frankly erotic) just captivates me every time I look at it. Joanne
